medium_Stitch1.4.jpg

A beautiful blog for dads

I stumbled upon this american blogsite for dads, where I just read a very  lovely post, and with the authors kind permission, I am reposting it here. I wish all dads (and moms) out there would read this, and possibly, take to heart what the author says.

And here is the link to the site itself, also posted with permission, please have a look at it.

" Maintain Their Innocence

With all the things that I try to teach my kids, I finally realized that there is something crucial they have to teach me. Acceptance. It is amazing to me how they totally lack the ability to prejudge somebody based on their label, status or category. They do not assume anything about another child because she is black or because he has two daddies. They treat each and every person based on the values they hold important. Now, granted, the values that a two year old may hold are probably not the best for us as adults to use for making decisions about people. But the point is, children treat each person equally and without preconception.

The question for me has become, “How do I preserve that sense of equality in my children?” I know that I have inherent prejudices within myself. I know that no matter how hard I try, I am immediately aware of the color of a person when they walk into a room. And even though my brother is gay and I have been closely associated with the gay community for many years, I make snap judgments about people when I learn that they are gay. I get nervous when a homeless person approaches me to ask for change. I instinctively check to make sure my wallet and other valuables are secure.

I am fully aware of this, yet I still do it each and every time I encounter somebody different from myself. And I know where it came from. I learned it growing up. Yes, in part from my parents who grew up in another time with different values, but also in school from my peers and from TV and people I saw on the streets. It was all around me growing up. And so, I picked up on it and repeated those thoughts and behaviors. So, now what do I do? How do I keep my children from learning these attitudes from me and the rest of the society around them?

I could ignore the stereotypes and prejudices I know they will encounter and hope they don’t notice. Or I could confront the problem head on. I think I’m going with the latter option. I will need to be constantly vigilant of my behavior, the behavior of my children and the behavior they may observe whether it be on TV or on the playground. I will need to point out examples of right and wrong behavior. If a child they don’t know arrives on the playground I will need to encourage them to invite that child into their play and take the opportunity to get to know somebody new. If they don’t click I won’t force them to be best friends, but I will encourage them to give each person a fair and equal chance. And if it doesn’t work out, to at least be respectful.

Eventually they will learn things like some men love other men. They are likely to encounter children who have two parents of the same gender. The thing I will want them to learn from meeting these families is that the important ingredient for making a family is love. For, with love, all things are possible.

They will learn that there are many different religions and ways to view God. I will teach them that within each religion resides the same basic message; God is a loving God and s/he wants us to love one another as we love ourselves. I will teach them that religion can be perverted by the lust for power, greed and hatred of men, but that if they love God and trust God, they will live a good and worthwhile life.

All in all, I want my children to maintain their innocence and their ability to welcome each person with no prejudice or expectations. It may mean that they experience pain and heartbreak on occasion, but I believe that it will expose them to much more love and possibility than they would experience otherwise. And in the process of trying to help them maintain their innocence, I hope that some of it will rub off on me."

Evil Overlord, or world domination?

If you ever considered becoming an evil Overlord as a kid, considering careers, here are two things you have to look at:

the do and don'ts of overlords
and the blog of a person plotting for world domination.

don't say I never provide for my readers.
