Worlds Biggest Cod?
Employees at Fishingrefinement Nils H. Nilsen AS in Båtsfjord didn't believe their own eyes when fishingboat «Birgerson» delivered the days catch on Wednesday, last week.
It appeared that they had caught a giant amongst fishes, weighing in at astounding 46 kilos when gutted. Wich means that with all innards it weighed 56 kilos, and could possibly be the biggest Cod in the world!
-This must be the Father of fishes in the BarentsSea, says daily manager Jarle Nilsen to Dagbladet.no.
-We've never recieved a fish of this size before. It's so large that for the fishing industry its hopeless.
Local newspaper Finnmarken said friday that it may be a world record. According to a quick check the paper did a 40 kilos Cod was caught outside of Gryllefjord march 2001, and in february this year a 45 kilos cod was delivered to a fishingrefinery at Nordmæla. In march 1977 a 51 kilos fish was caught at Henningsvær, and tall tales are told about a 55 kilos fish supposedly caught by a boat at some point.
Unfortunately, this Cod have already been shipped off to Belgium, and can easily end up a major attraction at tomorrows European Seafood fair in Brüssels.
- And there it will have an audience of 40 000, according to a proud Nilsen. It was however exported there at going price per kilo, 900 NoK alltogether.
But not everybody is happy about the monstercod dissapearing so rapidly abroad. Nilsen and co. now have fish researchers telling them off, and have to track down the belgian buyer in order to get the head back.
-The researchers would like to find out the age of the cod. They can apparently reach the ripe old age of somewhere between 40 and 50 years, and this particular cod would have to be very old in order to get so big Nilsen explains. He goes on to say that "stones" inside the fishs head and preferrably the one behind the cods ear can help terminate the age.
-You take a cross section of the stone and have a look at it through a microscope, then you'll see rings, like you see in trees he informs the reporter.
The export person have been informed of the headhunt, and Jarle Nilsen have high hopes that the cods head will get back to Norway without any troubles.
